Hadithi Extra Large Baskets

Regular price $110.00 $0.00 Unit price per

The Hadithi Baskets are made out of sisal grown locally in the Taita Valley, Kenya. The fibre from the leaves of the sisal plant is rolled into twine, and then woven into these beautiful creations.

The Taita ladies from Kasigau Weaver's Group dye the fibres themselves and then roll the twine on their lap. Making baskets is a very labour intensive art. Each basket is truly one of a kind and a poetic ode to the talented ladies of Taita Valley.

When you buy Hadithi handicrafts, you are actively helping to provide an income for over 1100 ladies from an agricultural community.

Dimensions: 31-40cm diameter

Due to the unique and handmade nature of the product, size, patterns and colours will vary. We have put images up of each kind available. If you are looking something specific, please contact us.

Ideas on how to use them:

  • How cute would these be on a shelf, by your fireplace, or just a receptacle for your knitting wares, or blankets

  • A hamper for toilet paper, towels, etc in your bathroom

  • Could function as a beautiful home to your plant pot. Be sure to line it with some form of plastic to prevent molding. It is after all organic fibre.

  • Spot clean

  • remove dents by moistening lightly and reshaping as needed

  • Sisal is famous for being an extremely strong and hardy material; it is resilient even to salt water! However, care should be taken when exposing your basket to full sunlight, since this will cause the colours to fade. Whilst a splash of water will not harm these baskets, drying your basket out if it is made wet is recommended. Sisal is a natural product, and if it remains damp for a long period it can go mouldy. If you use your basket as a plant pot lining it with a waterproof bag is advisable.
